Recovering from Tropical Cyclone Jasper

Cyclone Jasper crossed the Queensland state coast on December 13 as a category 2 storm on a five-tier scale that whipped the sparsely populated region with winds of up to 140 kph. 

The cyclone crossed near the Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal, 110 kilometres north of the city of Cairns.

Extraordinary Disaster Assistance Recovery Grants

Grants of up to $75,000 are available for affected producers following Tropical Cyclone Jasper, commencing 13 December 2023, to hire or purchase equipment and materials, clean up, remove debris, replace fencing and other costs associated with the recovery process. Disaster Impact Survey

Those who experienced losses or damage to their property should fill in the Disaster Impact Survey to help the Queensland Government and industry quickly assess the regions for financial recovery assistance.

  • AMIA are seeking on ground assistance with for producers to complete their Disaster Impact Surveys and we will update you with progress as it comes to hand.
  • Producers are encouraged to specifically record tractor hours in the clean up process as these hours will be financially supported. Engagement with external contractors to work on cyclone damage repairs will also be financially supported, so keep invoices. Please record all cyclone repair activities in a diary.
  • Producers should keep records of any impacts, including date-stamped photos (which most cameras do automatically). This will inform eligibility for assistance. Producers will need to assess and document damages and losses from this event to submit a claim once Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements are activated.

Transport Impact Updates

Freight subsidies
Up to $5,000 for primary producers to assist with the movement of stock, feed, machinery, fuel, water, and building or fencing materials. Contact: DAF on 13 25 23 or click here. 

Transport and Main Roads is continuously monitoring, assessing and reviewing our roads, bridges and culverts across Queensland. Conditions can change quickly, particularly due to weather. Restrictions are implemented to maintain ongoing safety for all road users.

  • Stay in close contact with your transport providers for updates on roads and potential load limits.
  • Use the Mareeba Council Disaster Dashboard to access TMR road closure updates.

Visit the QLDTraffic website, download the app or call 13 19 40 to report an incident or get real time traffic reports. The QLD Traffic app provides personalised push notifications for important traffic alerts that affect your favourite routes and places, and it can even reach out to you about nearby traffic alerts using audio notifications while you're on the road.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator may exempt a heavy vehicle from a prescribed requirement if the vehicle is being used in an emergency (for example, a fire, explosion or natural disaster) to protect life or property, or to restore communication or the supply of energy or water or services. If an emergency or recovery operations have interfered with your ability to lodge an application, please contact the NHVR by calling 13 NHVR (13 64 87) to obtain the required oral or in writing exemption.
