23.01.2024
In December 2023, state and territory biosecurity agencies received research findings which indicated methyl bromide disinfestation schedules are not suitable for mangoes, as they did not provide adequate control for Queensland fruit fly (QFF). Further to this is a number of recent and historical QFF larvae have been found in fumigated mangoes at the Tasmanian border.
As a result, state quarantine regulators of QFF pest free areas of South Australia (SA), Tasmania (TAS) and Western Australia (WA) will be revoking methyl bromide as a disinfestation option for QFF in mango fruit.
These changes will come into effect on 21 February 2024, which is 30 days from the notification.
Alternate quarantine treatments for mangoes will continue to be available in accordance with existing importing state requirements.
