Transport

Efficient and consistent transport is essential to maintaining mango quality from orchard to market. Even short periods of poor handling or temperature abuse during transit can significantly impact shelf life and eating quality.

Several quality attributes are at risk during transport, including:

  • Overripe or underripe fruit
  • Uneven ripening between and within pallets
  • Poor skin colour development
  • Chilling injury
  • Skin blemishes or marks

To reduce these risks, it's critical to address several key factors, such as:

  • The temperature of the fruit at the time of loading
  • Pallet configuration and airflow within containers
  • Refrigeration system capacity, air circulation, and container insulation
  • Gas accumulation inside containers, particularly carbon dioxide
